Why You Should Never Travel with A Felon on a Family Roadtrip

My Hometown : Southwest Detroit

When you meet, Rosendo “Roy” Mauricio, you don’t just see his smile and hear the warmth in his voice, you feel it too. It sways you over, effortlessly folding you into the mad mix of his Mauricio mind. You WANT to be Roy’s friend, sit next to him at the high barstools at the Express Bar when yells to Zeke to bring another round of beers. You know you’ll be late for dinner or maybe not even get home at all.

My father’s financial foray into Detroit’s deep, dark 1970’s underworld of drugs was a wild ride , indeed, punctuated by Dad deciding to bring the family along . Dad jammed all seven of us in his Red Blazer.

My dreams persist, therfore I ponder: writing my first opera, !Respiro!, finding lost relatives in Warsaw, opening my Mexican-Polish bakery in Detroit.
